No-one likes a know-it-all but the latest research has confirmed what we said last year – time spent trying to sort tech issues is costing UK businesses money! New research released this week by Samsung Electronics has revealed time spent on technology issues could be a major contributor to the UK’s productivity gap.
While small business owners are spending nearly three and a half hours on sales and close to three hours on marketing a week to drive new business, IT accounts for two hours and 47 minutes, and office management almost three hours.
The UK currently ranks 7th in the G7 and 17th in the G20 for productivity per person, and spending less time on these tasks could help to close this gap.
But it’s not just a case of bringing in someone with IT knowledge to help save time – although having an outsourced IT director will certainly benefit many businesses which don’t have the expertise in-house.
It’s also about thinking smarter. It could be about bringing in new tech solutions to help you work smarter, not harder. It could be replacing an out-dated printer which keeps failing, an old photocopier which won’t scan with a piece of kit which can do all three!
There are software solutions which can improve productivity – whether that’s a project management app to help keep tasks organised or an email application which sorts incoming mail so you don’t have to work through tons of messages to find out which ones are the priorities to deal with.
With business rates on the rise, the need for businesses to adjust their working environment is highlighted by the finding that nearly two-thirds (62%) of SME owners encourage mobile working. And, ensuring that their team has access to the latest technology (92%) is more important to SME owners in increasing productivity than always being contactable (83%), having access to emails outside of work hours (81%) and perks such as team drinks and half-days (80%).
